Our main purpose for visiting Kars was to take the Doğu Touristic Express to Ankara.
However this being our first and probably only visit to the area it was important to experience everything it has.
The biggest surprise was its cheese which was originally produced as a collaboration between the Swiss and Russians before being taken over by the Turks.
There is a strong Russian influence to the city from its more modern history but for such a small city pop. 90,000 it's had quite an eventful long history.
