In the heart of Mysuru, Karnataka, stands one of India's most spectacular royal landmarks, Mysore Palace, also known as Amba Vilas Palace.
With its magnificent domes, grand arches, colourful interiors and fascinating history, the palace offers visitors a glimpse into the extraordinary world of India's former Maharajas.
Built for the Wadiyar royal dynasty and completed in 1912, the present palace was designed by British architect Henry Irwin. Its distinctive Indo-Saracenic architecture combines Hindu, Islamic, Rajput and Gothic influences, creating a remarkable blend of styles.
Inside, visitors can discover beautifully decorated royal halls, intricate ceilings, stained-glass windows and exquisite craftsmanship. The spectacular Durbar Hall and Kalyana Mantapa are particular highlights.
But perhaps the most magical experience comes after sunset, when approximately 97,000 lights illuminate the palace, transforming it into a breathtaking golden spectacle. This usually takes place on Sundays, public holidays and during the famous Mysuru Dasara festival.
The palace is also a wonderful starting point for exploring Mysuru, a city celebrated for its colourful markets, silk, sandalwood and rich cultural traditions.
